Are you choosing the wrong frames for your face shape?
Face shapes are primarily what determines which frames will look good on you. They are the 'make-or-break' element of choosing your eyeglasses. The general rule is always go the opposite your face shape to add depth, angles, and emphasis on your natural features. First, find your face shape below, then use the frame shape filters on our catalog to shop glasses that will best suit you!
Round faces are easily defined as being as wide as they are long, with a non-angular jaw line.
Do: The ideal shape for round faces is angular frames. Rectangular and square frames look best on round faces.
Heart-shaped (base up triangle) faces usually have a wider forehead that leads down to a narrower chin. Because this type of face shape naturally emphasizes your temples, frames that draw attention to the lower part of your face work best for heart shaped faces.
Do: Try rimless frames. If you want rims, try frames that are wider at the bottom. Lighter colors work best.
Oval faces are a proportional oval shape. They are one of the most desirable face shape for glasses, because almost all frame shapes look great on them!
Do: Keep a balanced emphasis on all your features to keep the proportion of your face.
Square shaped faces simply mean they are as wide as they are long, with a strong angular jaw line.
Do: Try to lengthen and soften your face by wearing frames that are opposite your face shape. Circular frames, like pilot shaped or oval-shaped glasses, do a great job of softening your sharp features.
Diamond shape faces are probably the rarest face shape. With a narrow forehead, wide cheek bones that descend to a narrow chin, you want to try and highlight your eyes, while softening your cheekbones.
Do: Look for frames that are heavier on top. Cat eye frames or semi-rimless that draw attention back to your brow line are ideal.
Triangle faces (base down triangle) can easily be identified by the cheek and chin areas being wide and the forehead being narrow. Like the diamond face shape, with a base-down triangle, you want to try to bring attention back towards the upper part of your face to balance out your features.
Do: Try cat-eye shaped frames, or semi-rimless. Also, frames that are heavily decorated and detailed on the top half would complement this face shape.
Just like your face shape, the shape of your eyeglass frame is also important to keep in mind. The frame you choose can manipulate your face shape by either emphasizing or downplaying your features. There are three basic types of frame shapes:
Full Rim GlassesFull rim frames accentuate your eyes. Since your eyes should line up with the center of the lens, full rim glasses literally frame your eyes, and make them the focus of your face.
Semi-Rimless FramesSemi-rimless frames call attention to the top portion of your face, such as your brow line. They also add breadth to the top part of your face, which is why they work so well for diamond and triangle face shapes.
Rimless FramesRimless frames are the closest thing to invisible glasses. With lenses held together with just screws, no frame, these glasses give a sleek, professional look without adding any dimension or distortion to the balance of your features.
Glasses, like shoes, aren't flattering or beneficial if they don't fit the way they should. Just like you wouldn't buy shoes that are too big or too small, you shouldn't buy frames that don't fit either. It's important to find a pair that is in proportion to your face size. An ideal sized frame would measure up with your temples, won't move when you smile, and your pupils fall right at the midpoint of the lens.
Certain complexions look balanced with certain colors. Every complexion is either warm-toned or cool-toned. Warm tones means your skin undertone is yellow. A blue or pink undertone means you have a cool-toned complexion. Hair is often another indication of which undertone you might be. Blonde, flat black, light brown and red are usually found on warm-toned people. Meanwhile, cool complexion people tend to be strawberry blonde, flat brown, salt and pepper, grey or blue-black.
If you have a warm undertone, some frame colors that may work better for you include colors like gold, copper, khaki, coral, blond tortoise, off-white, peach, warm blue or bright red.
For cool undertones, consider black, blue, plum, traditional tortoiseshell, magenta, pink or mid-toned amber.
